Playstation Games with 5.1 Surround Sound

  • 4 min read

If you’re a big Playstation gamer, you know that the quality of a game hinges on its level of immersion.

  • Do you lose track of hours at a time?
  • Do you feel like you’ve been teleported to another world?

Well, much of that legwork is done by a game’s sound design. Sound allows you to be enveloped into the world of the game, but to best experience them you need a quality surround sound system.

Once you’re set up there, there are ample Playstation games available in 5.1 surround sound that will take you to worlds far and wide—without having to leave the comforts of your couch. Here are our recommendations for some of the best Playstation games in 5.1 surround sound.

Sci Fi/Fantasy Games for 5.1 Surround Sound

Death Stranding (2019)

Death Stranding

If you’re a gamer, it probably comes as no surprise that a Hideo Kojima game made it onto our best-of list. The sound on this game is AMAZING. With a huge catalogue of incredible licensed music, most notably featuring tracks by Low Roar, the sound catalog here includes something for everyone.

The musical hero of this game is Ludvig Forssell who brings massive depth and dynamism with his incredible haunting score. This synth-heavy orchestration is so distinct that it’ll be buzzing around your head for months to come. Death Stranding really illustrates how evocative music, and your surround sound system, can be when coupled with the right visuals.

Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

Cyberpunk 2077

One of the hottest—and most controversial—games right now is Cyberpunk 2077. The game may have its faults, but strong sound design and a killer score aren’t two of them.

Teleporting you into the fantastically futuristic Night City, this game is completely immersive when it comes to the sounds greeting you around every corner. From snatches of dialogue to music blaring out of cars and bars, it’s soundscape is entirely innovative and unique.

For all the flack the game is getting because of its design bugs, the score offers up yet another pearl from developer CD Projekt. And, optimistically, the game will only get better as some of those annoying design flaws are addressed.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt (2015)

The Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt

An older release from CD Projekt game, but still a goodie. 2015’s The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was considered an instant classic. You play as monster slayer Geralt of Rivia in one of the most immersive worlds ever created, where every nook and cranny is packed with incredible polyphonic creatures, dialogue, and mythical folk tunes.

Utilizing both full orchestras and some of Europe’s most talented folk musicians, it’s really no wonder this game is one of the most awarded of all time.

Action/War Games for 5.1 Surround Sound

Battlefield 5 (2018)

Battlefield 5

When you play Battlefield 5 in surround sound you’ll hear every bullet whizzing, rocket exploding, and mine detonating like you’re right there on the frontline. Whether you’re playing online or in campaign mode, the sound editing on this game is dynamic enough to deliver during both high-octane action and quieter moments of cut-scene dialogue.

But you play Battlefield for war, and war it delivers. M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, Browning automatic rifles, and Thompson machine guns––if they fired it in the Second World War, you’ll hear it in this game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Call of Duty - Modern Warfare

The best known war game franchise hit another homer with this revamp of the classic Modern Warfare sub-series. The 16th game in the franchise features an entirely new game engine and some of its most cinematic cut-scenes yet. Whether you’re playing campaign mode and fighting with rebels in the fictional country of Urzikstan or playing online, this is a completely immersive war game experience.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Red Dead Redemption 2

Experience all the gun-slinging Wild West goodness you can handle, and hear it in cinematic surround sound when you play 2018’s release Red Dead Redemption 2. The gun fire sounds dynamic and the robbery and chase scenes will have your blood pumping. But it’s the quieter moments in the game that will really make you marvel.

Hearing a deer scurrying as you pull back your bow, the wind rustling through the Western plains, these are the moments that provide achingly reverential stillness that are amplified with surround sound. Honestly, you’ll feel like you’re actually out there in the unspoiled West.

Hot Tip: Keep an ear out for one of the best Willie Nelson songs in decades.

Sports Games for 5.1 Surround Sound

NBA 2K 2021 (2020)

NBA 2K 2021

When you can’t attend an NBA game in person, you can immerse yourself in the next best thing through NBA 2K 2021, easily one of the best basketball games around. Hear the crowd, feel its pulse, and live out all your professional sports fantasies from your living room. You can play online with your buddies, talking trash as you hit a step-back three pointer, or you be the star of the show in another titillating addition of MyCareer mode.

The latter mode works especially well in surround sound, as you feel like you actually embody your player on the court.

Madden 21 (2020)

Madden 21

Hear jeers and cheers in real time LIKE YOU’RE THERE with Madden 21 in 5.1 surround sound. A great workout for your speakers, this game puts you dead on the 50 yard-line field at Lambeau playing in front of 40,000 of your closest friends. And with a soundtrack featuring some of the best artists in the rap game, you’ll be bobbing your head as you customize a player, GM a team, or build your dream stadium.

Things get especially vivid when playing in Face of the Franchise mode. It’s almost like you can hear the opposing defense pumping themselves up as they get ready to take you down.
